    Fine-grained timing using genetic programming

    In previous work, we have demonstrated that it is possible to use Genetic Programming to minimise the resource consumption of software, such as its power consumption or execution time. In this paper, we investigate the extent to which Genetic Programming can be used to gain fine-grained control over software timing. We introduce the ideas behind our work, and carry out experimentation to find that Genetic Programming is indeed able to produce software with unusual and desirable timing properties, where it is not obvious how a manual approach could replicate such results. In general, we discover that Genetic Programming is most effective in controlling statistical properties of software rather than precise control over its timing for individual inputs. This control may find useful application in cryptography and embedded systems

    Mitigating Branch-Shadowing Attacks on Intel SGX using Control Flow Randomization

    Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) is a promising hardware-based technology for protecting sensitive computations from potentially compromised system software. However, recent research has shown that SGX is vulnerable to branch-shadowing -- a side channel attack that leaks the fine-grained (branch granularity) control flow of an enclave (SGX protected code), potentially revealing sensitive data to the attacker. The previously-proposed defense mechanism, called Zigzagger, attempted to hide the control flow, but has been shown to be ineffective if the attacker can single-step through the enclave using the recent SGX-Step framework. Taking into account these stronger attacker capabilities, we propose a new defense against branch-shadowing, based on control flow randomization. Our scheme is inspired by Zigzagger, but provides quantifiable security guarantees with respect to a tunable security parameter. Specifically, we eliminate conditional branches and hide the targets of unconditional branches using a combination of compile-time modifications and run-time code randomization. We evaluated the performance of our approach by measuring the run-time overhead of ten benchmark programs of SGX-Nbench in SGX environment

    A 24-Year-Old Man with Spontaneous Right Tension Pneumothorax Presenting with Abdominal Pain with an Initial Symptomatic Diagnosis of Acute Pancreatitis.

    BACKGROUND Tension pneumothorax (TP) is a medical emergency resulting in air accumulation in the pleural cavity of the affected side. Later, this air applies pressure on the mediastinal structures, leading to a shift of these structures toward the contralateral side. This shift results in a picture of obstructive shock with a possibly fatal consequence if not detected and treated early. Treatment should not await radiological confirmation, and the red flags in the history and physical examination are enough to proceed with decompressing the affected hemithorax with a large-bore needle. Usually, patients with TP present to the Emergency Department with pleuritic chest pain and shortness of breath, but rare presentations are still possible. CASE REPORT We report a case of a 24-year-old male patient with TP who presented to the Emergency Department with severe epigastric abdominal pain with a clinical picture of acute pancreatitis. X-ray showed a right-sided TP. Immediately, we performed a needle decompression followed by chest tube insertion. Four days later, the patient was discharged home uneventfully. CONCLUSIONS In this case report, we aim to draw the attention of physicians in the Emergency Department to the need to consider the possibility of upper abdominal pain elicited by chest pathologies. Furthermore, we need to investigate the effect of TP on coronary perfusion

    Social preferences, accountability, and wage bargaining

    We experimentally test preferences for employment in a collective wage bargaining situation with heterogeneous workers. We vary the size of the union and introduce a treatment mechanism transforming the voting game into an individual allocation task. Our results show that highly productive workers do not take employment of low productive workers into account when making wage proposals, regardless of whether only union members determine the wage or all workers. The level of pro-social preferences is small in the voting game, but it increases if the game becomes an individual allocation task. We interpret this as an accountability effect

    Robotic lobectomy: tips, pitfalls and troubleshooting

    The robotic approach in thoracic surgery has rapidly gained popularity in recent years. As with the introduction of any new technology, this warrants not only adaptation of the operative technique itself, but also the evolution of appropriate troubleshooting strategies. A selected number of helpful tips and technical procedural manoeuvres have been compiled to prevent intraoperative problems, as well as to overcome challenging situations that can arise during robotic lobectomies. In robotic surgery, as opposed to open surgery or video-assisted thoracic surgery, these tips serve an important purpose for the operating surgeon, as well as the entire surgical team involved in the procedure. All the assembled recommendations have proved their effectiveness and have been successfully used by the authors in many procedures. Furthermore, these manoeuvres have been found to be of great importance in the training and proctoring of thoracic surgeons, fellows and residents (bed-side assistants). This guide of clearly arranged tips and troubleshooting strategies offers surgeons a useful tool to overcome difficult situations in robotic lobectomy and preferably improve the reproducibility and safety of their procedure

    Performance of Solar-Assisted Modified-Open-Front Swine Nurseries

    Performance data of two modified-open-front non-mechanically ventilated swine nurseries have shown that solar energy can be effectively utilized to maintain a productive environment within the animal space during cold weather (temperatures as low as -26°C ( - 15 °F). The nurseries feature a monoslope roof design and passive collector panels that also function as warm weather ventilation panels. An active solar-heating system uses a ground-level collector operated in conjunction with an in-floor solar heat distribution and storage system. The nurseries were designed to handle pigs weighing from 7 to 23 kg (15 to 50 lb). An average of 19% of the solar energy incident on the collector was transferred to the floor surface during the heating seasons from October 1980 to January 1982. Season heating costs were approximately 1.0% of the estimated cost to heat the nursery by conventional means

    Synthesis and Reactions of Iron and Ruthenium Dinitrogen Complexes

    This thesis is primarily concerned with the synthesis and reactions of iron and ruthenium dinitrogen complexes of tripodal phosphine ligands. Of particular interest is the cationic dinitrogen bridged iron complex [(FeH(PP3))2(μ-N2)]2+ 23, containing the tetradentate ligand P(CH2CH2PMe2)3, PP3 1, and its potential for facilitating the reduction of the bound dinitrogen upon treatment with acid. The synthesis of a selection of novel and known tripodal phosphine and amino phosphine ligands is described. New ligands N(CH2CH2CH2PMe2)3 N3P3 7 and P(CH2CH2CH2PiPr2)3 P3Pi3 11 were synthesised by nucleophilic displacement of bromide from the bromoalkylphosphine and bromoalkylamine precursors with the relevant phosphide. A new method for synthesis of known ligand P(CH2CH2CH2PMe2)3 P3P3 19 by the nucleophilic substitution of its chloroalkylphosphine oxide with dimethylphosphide and subsequent reduction is also reported. The reaction of [(FeH(PP3))2(μ-N2)]2+ 23 with base produced the singly deprotonated mixed valence species [(FeH(PP3))(μ-N2)(Fe(PP3))]+ 37 and subsequently the iron(0) dinuclear species (Fe(PP3))2(μ-N2) 38 and mononuclear complex Fe(N2)(PP3) 44. The 15N labelling of complexes has allowed the 15N NMR spectra of 23, 37 and 44 to be reported along with the observation of a long-range 5JP-P coupling across the bridging dinitrogen of 37. Complexes 23 and 37 were also structurally characterised by X-ray crystallography. The treatment of a variety of iron PP3 1 dinitrogen complexes, including the mononuclear species [(Fe(N2)H(PP3)]+ 22, with acid, or base then acid, did not result in the formation of ammonia from reduction of the complexed dinitrogen. The reactions of FeCl2(PP3) 24 and FeClH(PP3) 25 with ammonia and hydrazine afforded the complexes [FeCl(N2H4)(PP3)] 48, [FeH(N2H4)(PP3)] 47, [FeCl(NH3)(PP3)] 49 and [FeH(NH3)(PP3)] 46. Complexes 47 and 46 are considered potential intermediates in any reduction of the dinitrogen ligand of 23 to ammonia. Complexes 49 and 46 were also formed from the decomposition of the hydrazine complexes 48 and 47. The 15N NMR shifts, derived from both the 15N labelling of complexes and from 1H-15N 2D NMR experiments at natural abundance are reported. In addition, complex 47 was characterised by X-ray crystallography. The novel ligand P(CH2CH2PiPr2)3 PPi3 12 was used in the successful synthesis of [FeCl(PPi3)]+ 51 and [RuCl(PPi3)]+ 56. Reduction of 51 and 56 with potassium graphite under dinitrogen afforded the complexes Fe(N2)(PPi3) 52 and Ru(N2)(PPi3) 57 respectively. This is the first report of a Ru(0) dinitrogen complex. Treatment of 52 and 57 with lutidinium tetrafluoroborate resulted in protonation and oxidation of the metal centre to afford the hydrido complexes [Fe(N2)H(PPi3)]+ 53 and [Ru(N2)H(PPi3)]+ 58 respectively. 15N labelled analogues of 52, 53, 57 and 58 were achieved by exchange reactions with 15N2 gas, allowing for analysis by 15N NMR spectroscopy. Species 52, 57 and 58 have also been structurally characterised by X-ray crystallography. Treatment of 52 with excess acid in THF afforded both 53 and the dihydrogen complex [Fe(H2)H(PPi3)]+ 54. The mechanism of formation of 54 probably involves the C-H activation of the solvent THF. The complex cation [RuCl(P3Pi3)]+ 65 was synthesised using the novel ligand P3Pi3 11. A polymeric iron(II) complex, [Fe2Cl4(N3P3)2]n 66, of the tridentate ligand N3P3 7 was also synthesised. Characterisation of both 65 and 66 by X-ray crystallography is reported. (FeCl)2(μ-Cl)2(μ-Pi2)2 68, an unusual bridged dimer of the known ligand CH2(PiPr2)2 Pi2 67, and iron(II) and iron(0) tetramers of the PP3 1 ligand, namely [Fe4Cl4(PP3)5]4+ 71 and Fe4(PP3)5 72 were also characterised by X-ray crystallography

    Isotope and trace element insights into heterogeneity of subridge mantle

The definitive version was published in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems 15 (2014): 2438–2453, doi:10.1002/2014GC005314.Geochemical data for abyssal peridotites are used to determine the relationship to mid-ocean ridge basalts from several locations at ridge segments on the SW Indian Ridge (SWIR), the Mid-Cayman-Rise (MCR), and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Based on chemical and petrological criteria peridotites are categorized as being either dominantly impregnated with melt or being residual after recent melting. Those that are considered impregnated with melt also have isotopic compositions similar to the basalts indicating impregnation by an aggregate MORB melt. A SWIR and MCR residual peridotite Nd-isotopic compositions partly overlap the Nd-isotopic compositions of the basalts but extend to more radiogenic compositions. The differences between peridotite and basalt Nd-isotopic compositions can be explained by incorporating a low-solidus component with enriched isotopic signature in the subridge mantle: a component that is preferentially sampled by the basalts. At the MAR, peridotites and associated basalts have overlapping Nd-isotopic compositions, suggesting a more homogeneous MORB mantle. The combined chemistry and petrography indicates a complex history with several depletion and enrichment events. The MCR data indicate that a low-solidus component can be a ubiquitous component of the asthenosphere. Residual abyssal peridotites from limited geographic areas also show significant chemical variations that could be associated with initial mantle heterogeneities related to events predating the ridge-melting event.
